My son was very disappointed that the Grand Pier only allows all day wristbands at weekends or during Somerset school holidays. Our holidays started earlier. The beach was clean and tidy, lots being done there ready for the Easter Holidays. Getting around is easy with the local buses and the drivers were very helpful regarding the cheapest fares for us
Blue Anchor is within easy drive or train ride to Minehead. Spend a while at Blue Anchor station on the West Somerset railway or take a trip on this wonderfully scenic and pretty line.
A nice town, busy, attractive, lots of shopping and eating outlets, and history too with the really nice Museum of Somerset. Some good pubs and very good beer! Recommend The Plough near the railway station.
There's an interesting town walk that includes Castle Street, featured in the film 'Tom Jones' and home of the Arts Centre, the oldest in the country. Check out what's on there. Somerset Brick and Tile Museum on East Quay (only open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-4) shows the products that the town is best known for. Blake Museum is good on the Battle of Sedgemoor, last battle on English soil. It may be a chain but a window seat in Prezzo on the Cornhill is great for people watching, particularly in the evenings! The Green Olive on West Quay (Turkish) is fine and on a decent day, have a drink on the quayside at The Fountain. Bridgwater is easy to walk around; it gets 'lively' on Friday/Saturday evenings. Come at Carnival time (Saturday nearest 5 November, Guy Fawkes night) for the amazing 'carts' with thousands of lights and singing and dancing or statuesque participants. Blackmore Farm at Cannington (5 miles west off A39) is a great B&B.
The museum is very interesting and it is possible to walk all the way around the reservoir which is good for bird watching and there are information boards explaining its history. Chard is well placed for exploring Somerset the north coast ( Minehead to Weston-Super-Mare ) and the south coast ( ie. Bridport, Lyme Regis, Sidmouth ) There are all the shops that you need, several takeaways and many local pubs for good food. It is best to have a car but Chard is well served by buses which take you to Taunton, Yeovil and Axminster where there are train stations.
minehead is a nice place have been before,,we like to go on the west somerset steam train,,but the steam train on the friday broke down and had to have diesel plus we should have left minehead at 10.10am and didnt leave until 11.20am,,,coming back on the 4.30pm it took 2hours to get back so wasnt a very good day
A rather run down old market town in the county of Somerset which has seen better days, but one which may be at an early phase of regeneration. My visit there was mainly to catch up with acquaintances from the past rather than for local sight-seeing.
What a truly exceptional experience, from the accommodation to dinner and the exemplary customer service. My expectations were exceeeded on every account. I was looking for contemporary accommodation with a restaurant nearby and I got fantastic accommodation and what's more, there is a restaurant on site with a fabulous menu to suit all tastes. What was a true added bonus was the pet friendly status and to be honest it's hard to find a decent restaurant where you aren't slumped in an obscure corner. The interior decor was lovely and the ambience was fantastic ! The chef especially made a homemade beef burger for my Toy Yorkshire terrier and the cod dish with mushy peas and triple fried chips was just outstanding. I was looking to move to the west Somerset area and this was the basis of my trip and stay at Notley Arms and I must say this certainly solidified my decision as I love great quality food and ambience and exceptional service. Notley Arms just ticks every box imaginable. Caroline the owner has a big presence in the running of the operation and she just met my every need effortlessly regarding my accommodation needs and dietary needs and I am not the easiest customer as I really do thrive on excellence coming from a consumerism background. I will certainly be returning time and time again. This truly is a hidden gem with beautiful offerings
So much in such a small area. We went to Easter Sunday service in the cathedral, just stunning. The choir is one of the best in the world according to Gramophone and with the amazing organ it was an emotional experience. At the other end of the scale there is a micro pub with huge choice of ciders (“All the way from Somerset”) and beers, well worth a visit for no loud music/TV, just gentle conversation and dogs....I’m off to watch Hot Fuz to relive some of the weekend...
Good location for exploring central & eastern Somerset market towns. Couple of good pubs - had a bit of a feel and look of Cotswolds at the older end of the village
Restaurant specialises in Thai cuisine and was very good - a welcome change from the usual UK pub food. Location was good and quieter than we expected from its position close to a minor B road. It is an old building and suffered the expected creaks and uneven floors of an old coaching inn. Good parking. All in all an enjoyable stay. Excellent location for a visit to the West Somerset Railway, where the station is short walk away. Bishops Lydeard is a typical small village and offers a nice evening walk on arrival.
Minehead
The Waverley is a short walk from the Minehead Railway Station (now home to West Somerset Railway) and bus stop. As travellers using public transport the location is excellent and it is only a short walk to shops, cafes and hotels and the harbour. The breakfast selection is excellent and well presented. Our hosts and their staff were friendly and engaging, always smiling and willing to help in any way. Our room was large enough that we were not cramped, it was clean and comfortable with a matching large ensuite.
Frome
I booked the George Hotel because it was one of the cheaper hotels in East Somerset and had a rail link to London. I thought it was the best choice but I was additionally impressed by my stay, which was really enjoyable. I liked the hotel, its pleasant ambience and being in Frome in general. I also liked a trip to Mels and Bradford on Avon. Nice room and a good breakfast. Would recommend for a three night stay over a weekend. Helpful staff, several requests I made of them, very happy with response.
A very comfortable sea-front hotel in North Somerset, in Exmoor. Fantastic views over the Bristol Channel over to Wales. Quaint village with small specialist shops. Great for local walks in the hills and vales, and excellent area for horse riding. Friendly staff who cannot do enough to keep you happy. Big room with power shower. Excellent food. Fantastic chef. One of the most dog-friendly hotels we have visited. Staff hand-fed her a sausage for breakfast. Perfect for a short break.
Room (33) was fine, nice size, and all the necessary fittings. Bed was mostly comfortable. Towels nice and big and fluffy. Good coffee station. Breakfast superb, catered for all choices and the fresh individually cooked breakfast was very hot and tasty. Restaurant food is again superb, about the best I have had in this standard of hotel. Thanks Chef. Good bar area. Great location with just a 12-15 minute walk to Somerset CCC. Staff efficient and courteous.
Shepton Mallet
The ambience was absolutely fabulous, the food presented was really tasty and value for money, the portions were great a really wholesome. Facilities in the highwayman were good, presented really well. Car parking was good and a good point to explore more of Somerset. A very enjoyable stay with friendly staff . The beds were comfortable. I will look forward to revisiting this hotel to see how things have progressed. Overall a nice place to stay.
The Grange is a little Somerset gem. It met all our needs. What made this hotel 10/10 was the staff and owners, we were made to to feel very welcome and nothing was to much trouble. Good bed, shower and bath, enough room and superb views of Brent Knoll area. Decent food on limited menu and plenty of space in dining area and bar room. The atmosphere is exceptional, mainly due the hard work of the team of staff and management. Ample parking.
Bridgwater
Great location, about half an hour drive from the main walks and places to visit around that area of Somerset. Hosts were very discreet, smooth check-in with no meeting required. Lovely quiet apartment, comfortable super king bed was appreciated! Heating working well with local thermostat available. Lots of light and air from the many windows around the apartment, all facing green spaces. Kitchen provided to cook your own meal.
There wasn't a breakfast option and the room was quite stuffy, due to the combination of very hot weather and a poor quality Aircon unit. No decaf hot drink sachets was slightly disappointing but staff were friendly; hotel is in a perfect position close to the station and cricket ground and it's good value for a single night stay to watch a Somerset match!
Minehead
The building was fascinating and our room wonderfully spacious. Breakfast was good, and we ate there two evenings and really enjoyed. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the pair of Great Dane 'guard' dogs were a real joy. We were there to visit the West Somerset Railway and it was a real bonus having a station a short drive from the hotel.
Perfectly located hotel for the West Somerset Railway and all that Minehead has to offer. On the waterfront, with rooms which over look the Railway station and the sea. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and the breakfast was amazing! Rooms were spacious and loved the selection of tea and coffee, fresh milk and biscuits in the room.
The staff is brilliant and absolutely professional. Our room was nice and welcoming. We had our dog with us and she was welcome - noting that not many places in Somerset and North Devon are dog-friendly. We also had dinner at the White Hart Hotel and it was amazing: fresh ingredients, impeccable presentation.
from the minute we arrived to the minute we left, everyone that worked there were very friendly and helpful. The food was exceptional, be it breakfast or dinner. Very good central location to get to most places in Somerset. The Old Vicarage Hotel is also very dog friendly. I would highly recommend a stay !
It is a modern hotel, very clean and full of nice, helpful staff. The price for a 4persons family was very competitive and they provided an extra bed for our little girl which we were very grateful about. Good deals on food. We will definitely come back if we come to Somerset again ❤️
Excellent service throughout, very ideally located near the motorway network and a lovely comfortable room very reasonably priced. Would stay here again and recommend. Also the hotel provides car parking on site and is near lots of Somerset attractions such as Hestercombe.
Langport
Hotel rooms attached amazing old pub. Great location to visit a number of tourist locations in the area. Pub is classic English pub with low beams, variety of beers and ciders (Somerset). Breakfast very good and an extensive dinner menu
Room was comfortable and spotlessly clean. Comfortable beds and excellent shower. Housekeeping staff were helpful and friendly. Location is excellent for travelling around Somerset and devon.
Comfortable, clean and good location. Lovely staff, though sadly I was only there very briefly so didn't see many! Would definitely return to the hotel as a base for time in Somerset.
Location was very suitable for our needs. We used it for a base to explore Somerset. Price was good for the hotel, we had a front facing room and surprisingly no traffic noise 👍🏻
Taunton
The hotel is in a great location if you are going to the Somerset Cricket ground. The staff were friendly. The room was comfortable with a good sized ensuite bathroom.
